Description
Rybelsus semaglutide is an oral tablet form of semaglutide, a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. It’s used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.
It is not approved for type 1 diabetes, nor is its safety established in children.
How It Works
Rybelsus semaglutide mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone and reduces blood glucose through multiple synergistic mechanisms:
-
Stimulates insulin release in response to elevated blood sugar
-
Suppresses glucagon to reduce liver glucose production
-
Slows gastric emptying, helping curb appetite
At the molecular level, semaglutide is structurally modified to resist DPP-4 degradation and prolong its activity via albumin binding. -
Available Strengths & Dosage Guidelines
Tablet strengths:
-
3 mg (initiation)
-
7 mg (maintenance)
-
14 mg (higher maintenance)
Typical dosing schedule:
-
Start with 3 mg once daily for 30 days (primarily for acclimatization, not for glycemic control)
-
Increase to 7 mg daily (effective for blood sugar control)
-
If needed after ≥30 days, can be increased to 14 mg daily
